Windy Hills Winery Comes To SW Washington

May 25, 2018

The great room at Windy Hills Winery in Ridgefield, Wash.

Southwest Washington’s newest winery and event center is grand enough to live up to owner Dave Kelly’s vision of “Napa meets the Northwest.” After retiring from over 30 years in the pet food business, Dave looked at doing something different on his land (formerly used as a Christmas tree farm) besides turning it into housing developments.

“I wanted to create a place where people can come together and be happy year round like they were during Christmas tree season,” says Dave. His new love for wine was the catalyst to make this dream happen.

Situated on a ten-acre parcel, the resplendent facility features a beautiful tasting room along with a stunning “great room” venue hall built around a colossal Northwest lodge style rock fireplace. A commercial kitchen and a unique bride’s room are also onsite. “We plan on holding several different events throughout the year such as weddings, anniversary parties, corporate events, fundraisers,” says Dave.

Two years ago they planted a five-acre estate vineyard on the land to Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay varieties (which are still maturing).

“Our winemaker, Bob Mayfield, just happened to live right behind me, and has been making wine for over 15 years learning from some of the best winemakers in the Willamette Valley,” says Dave. “His philosophy in his winemaking is to not overthink the wine but to take what Mother Nature gives you in the grape. His passion is Pinot Noir but he loves trying new things and plans to bring many of those to fruition.”

Expect a family-friendly experience with a knowledgeable staff. “They happen to be mostly family and close friends, because isn’t that what it really is all about?” says Dave.
