Mercer Estates 2014 Malbec and 2013 Sharp Sisters

July 18, 2016

Mercer_wines-13Sharp-14MalbecThe Mercer family farming tradition spans five generations. They’ve been actively managing the same property in Washington since 1886, first raising row crops and livestock, and today overseeing 2,400 acres of vineyards in the Horse Heaven Hills AVA (American Viticultural Area). The family has historical roots in the wine industry dating back to 1972 when Don and Linda Mercer were the first to plant wine grapes in the Horse Heaven Hills after being encouraged by Washington wine industry icon, Dr. Walter Clore.

In 2005, Rob and Brenda Mercer founded Mercer Wine Estates, which includes three tiers of estate wines: Mercer Estates, Mercer Estates Reserve, Mercer Canyons. They also make a single label dedicated solely to charity, Eagle & Plow, inspired by the family’s personal ties surround the events of September 11, 2001. (Rob Mercer served as a Captain in US Marine Corps in the 1990’s and re-enlisted to serve in Iraq in 2007-2008.) Mercers are known throughout eastern Washington for their stewardship of the land, conservation efforts, patriotism and contributions to the community.

These two wines from the estate tier represent exceptional value, primarily showcasing grapes from their Horse Heaven Hills vineyards. You can find them at numerous retail outlets, including their tasting room in Prosser, Wash.

Mercer Estates 2013 Horse Heaven Hills Sharp Sisters Red Blend, $19.99

This Merlot-dominant red wine pays tribute to Rob and Will Mercers’ paternal grandmother, Carma Sharp Mercer. “She and her five sitters were a lively, fun spirited group, aptly referred to as the Sharp Sisters,” says Brenda Mercer. This intriguing blend of Merlot (47%), Syrah (41%), Cabernet Sauvignon (10%), Sangiovese (1%) and Petit Verdot (1%) is a significant component in the Mercer Estates lineup.
Nose: Lovely aromas of dark fruit, coffee, caramel, mount, dried herbs and boxwood.
Taste: Loaded with personality and character, with sweet tannins and luscious ripe fruit flavors of dark plum and blackberry that merge with layers of savory herbs and caramel notes. Spiced cherry notes contribute a touch of brightness to the finish.
