Bosma Estate Winery Launches in Zillah

May 29, 2020

Julie and Steve Bosma of Bosma Estate Winery

Julie and Steve Bosma have been farming fruit orchards in the Yakima Valley since the 2000s, as well as growing wine grapes for customers in Washington and Oregon. The Bosmas recently teamed with winemaker Mike Seal of Sigillo Cellars—one of their earliest wine grape customers—to launch their own label.

“The winery grew out of our love for drinking wine,” says Julie. “We are involved in the barrel details, crush style, clones of varieties and blending.” For the Bosmas, it was a natural progression from the vineyard to the winery. Julie says their venture into making wine has ultimately made them better grape growers as well, giving them a firsthand understanding as to how even the tiniest details can affect the final product.

The estate vineyards are located on a southern slope in the Rattlesnake Hills AVA, with 47 acres between two vineyards—while their rustic-style tasting room is located in downtown Zillah.
Drop in for a tasting of their current vintage or opt for a special tasting focused on their various clones of Cabernet Sauvignon. The Clone 8 from Diamondback Ridge Vineyard is an exciting rendition filled with bold jammy fruit and earthen delights.

Visit the tasting room at 513 First Avenue in Zillah, WA. Check the website for hours at www.bosmawine.com.

Below are three releases we recently reviewed:

Bosma Estate Winery 2016 Clone 8 Cabernet Sauvignon, $42
Editor’s Choice – Outstanding, 91 pts.
Plush and brooding, offering solid structure and rich, distinctive flavors of plump blackberry and spiced red cherry with generous portions of mocha, anise, graphite and loamy earth notes. Well-defined tannins frame the elegant and expressive finish.

Bosma Estate Winery 2017 Malbec, $36
Editor’s Choice – Excellent, 89 pts.
Robust and earthy, with sultry aromas of eucalyptus, smoke, sage and black plum. The herbaceous flavors carry onto the broad palate, profiling layers of lavender, tea leaf and cedar mingled with pomegranate and pie cherry.

Bosma Estate Winery 2017 Roussanne, $28
Editor’s Choice – Outstanding, 91 pts.
An exemplary version, with a rich and slightly unctuou feel that echoes aromas and flavors of citrus oil, honeysuckle, red pear, yellow apple and warm hints of blanched almond. Shows fine length and balance, with limestone accents underscoring the finish.
