Woodinville Winemaker’s Triathlon to Benefit Seattle Children’s Hospital

June 29, 2010

Woodinville, WA –  The Woodinville wine community along with Redhook Ale Brewery and Willows Lodge in Woodinville, Washington, are hosting the 2nd annual Woodinville Winemaker’s & Brew Master Triathlon after the highly attended and talked about inaugural triathlon event last summer.

The Triathlon teams are made up of winemakers and wineries employees who will participate in a running, bicycling, and final padding stage with kayaks (or any other non-motorized water craft) upstream on the Sammamish River in front of Willows Lodge. The final stage of the Triathlon is done exclusively by the winemaker or brew master of each respective competing team.

Last year the 1st annual event raised $18,000 to support the Mitochondria Research Guild (www.nwmito-research.org) of Seattle Children’s Hospital.

Special VIP tickets are available for purchase to watch the event and attend the After Party at Redhook, one of the sponsors. Enjoy wine and beer from all 50 wineries and Redhook, food from Verachi Pizza, Ooba’s, the Barking Frog, Dante’s Inferno Dogs, Metropolitan Market and Espresso Elegance, and fun and games with live entertainment from Bakra Bata’s steel drums. The cost per person for this fabulous night is $125 (tax deductible) and the proceeds will go to the Mitochondrial Research Guild.

Each year thousands of children are diagnosed and suffer from defects of the mitochondria. Depending on which cells are affected, a child can have strokes, seizures, gastro-intestinal problems, blindness, deafness, muscle failure, diabetes, developmental delays, heart and kidney problems, immune system problems and liver disease. Whole systems within a body can begin to fail and the life of the child is compromised, changed or ended. The Woodinville wine community, Redhook Ale Brewery, and Willows Lodge are teaming up with the Mitochondrial Research Guild to contribute positively towards saving the lives of children affected by this disease.

For questions and inquiries about the event, please contact John Bigelow at 206-330-8668.

About the Mitochondrial Research Guild

The Mitochondrial Research Guild is a special interest guild of Seattle Children’s Hospital. The guild was founded in 2003 by a group of families in the Seattle area that are working together to raise awareness, promote research, and improve the quality of medical care that is available to children that are dealing with the devastating and potentially life threatening effects of this disease. Over the last seven years the Mitochondrial Research Guild has raised over $1,200,000 from our annual “Cure for Mito” auction and dinner to be held at Willows Lodge this year on September 11, 2010.
