June 3, 2011

Kim Roberts, co-owner of Westport Winery in Aberdeen, Washington, has been appointed to the Washington Wine Commission to represent fruit wine producers.

Her term begins in July and extends through June 2014.  Roberts replaces Peggy Patterson of Hoodsport Winery who has served in this position since 1987 when the commission was established.  The Washington Wine Commission is tasked with marketing and awareness of this state’s incredible wines.

Washington Department of Agriculture Director Dan Newhouse’s letter of appointment to Roberts said, “Your service as a board member will contribute to the success of the wine industry and the growth and vitality of Washington agriculture in general.”

Roberts said, “Washington wines excel in national and world markets, yet they are not fully appreciated here at home.  Unlike Californians who consume mostly California wines, Washington’s wine consumers have not fully embraced their own producers.  While serving on the Wine Commission I hope increase our citizen’s awareness and enjoyment of Washington wines.  There’s no better way to support our own economy than for our state residents to seek out our state’s products.  It should be especially easy to make this choice since Washington wines are such high quality.”

Kim and her husband Blain founded Westport Winery in 2008, which was featured in the June 2010 issue of Washington Tasting Room Magazine.  To date their wines have earned over 100 medals in regional, national and international wine competitions and evaluations.  Their son, Dana, is their winemaker and their daughter, Carrie, manages their tasting room.  The Roberts previously owned Lahaina Divers, the largest charter scuba business in Hawaii.  Kim Roberts has two degrees in Architecture from Washington State University and designed the family’s coastal winery.
