Browne Family Vineyards and Davey & Browne Wines Announce Fundraiser for Australian Wildfire Relief

January 15, 2020

Davey & Browne wines from the McLaren Vale represents the culmination of a long friendship between Australian wine luminary Kym Davey and American wine entrepreneur Andrew Browne. With Davey & Browne estate wines coming from the McLaren Vale appellation, continuing wildfires throughout Australia also reached nearby Adelaide Hills and compelled the partners to take action.

Browne Family Vineyards Principal Andrew Browne announced today that Davey & Browne wines from the McLaren Vale, and Browne Australian Olive Oils will be donating a portion of funds from direct-to-consumer sales to aid organizations that fight Australia’s fires and heal its wounded (people and animals).

A portion of the funds from direct-to-consumer sales will aid organizations that fight Australia’s fires and heal its wounded (people and animals).

All direct-to-consumer sales of the following select products will yield a 5 percent donation from gross sales (with an additional 5 percent match from Browne Family Vineyards to total 10 percent) to help this challenging time in Browne’s winery partner’s backyard, literally. Fundraising wines and olive oils include:

BROWNE FAMILY Cold-Pressed Ultra-Premium Extra Virgin Olive Oil, 500mL, $28
The ultra-premium olive oil is produced from select batches of olives from the very first harvest of the season from the Adelaide Hills. Intense freshly mown grass aroma, but with spicy rocket leaf and minty characteristics. Lighter and sweeter avocado-like flavors on the palate.

BROWNE FAMILY Premium Extra Virgin Olive Oil, 1L, $22
Made from riper olives picked mid-way through season in the Adelaide Hills, the olives produce a sweeter oil which tends to have a milder fruit flavor. This olive oil is ideal for cooking and will not overpower the flavor of food.

DAVEY & BROWNE 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon, McLaren Vale, 750ml, $42
Abundant aromas of cedar, hazelnut and fig lead to flavors of black cherry and strawberry jam with a hint of black pepper. (90 points, Wine Enthusiast; 93 points, Wine Advocate)

DAVEY & BROWNE 2016 Vortex Red Blend, McLaren Vale, 750ml, $22
This full-figured Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant wine, blended with Tempranillo and Grenache, shows plush red currant and black cherry marry on the nose, joined by dried tobacco leaf, black olive and smoke. (90 points, Wine Enthusiast; 92 points, Wine & Spirits)

The Davey & Browne brand represents the culmination of a long, enduring friendship between noted Australian wine luminary Kym Davey and American wine entrepreneur Andrew Browne. Together, these lifelong friends and contemporaries forged this unique fellowship of fine wine, launching the brand last year. With Davey & Browne estate wines coming from the McLaren Vale, continuing wildfires throughout Australia also reached nearby Adelaide Hills and compelled the partners to take action.

Partner Kym Davey reports the Davey Estate Vineyard remains safe, and is bracing for February, when peak wildfires are anticipated. In a recent dispatch to the U.S. wine team, he noted that the outpouring of international support and concern has been incredible.

“There have been so many messages wishing us well and enquiring about our wellbeing—thank you, it has meant so much to us,” he said. “Our family’s farms and vineyards have just been lucky (the Adelaide Hills fires did get pretty close) but so many others have been badly affected. It has been a very scary and sad time with several friends burned-out, losing absolutely everything. But, Australians being Australians, we are now quickly and quietly regrouping to support those that need help, true ‘mateship’.”
