Old Vines & Curated Picnics at Mongata Estate Winery

May 13, 2025

Scott and Vicki Nokleby’s inspiring journey into wine and hospitality led them from the bustling urban life of the Puget Sound to the serene landscapes of the Walla Walla Valley, in particular, the town of Milton-Freewater. In 2020, they discovered their idyllic 29-acre farm, which boasts breathtaking views of the Blue Mountains and Resurgent Vineyard, 17-acres of resilient old vines: Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Cabernet Franc. The Nokleby’s have since added
Chardonnay and Viognier.

Winemaker Peter Devison

Under the creative guidance of consulting winemaker Peter Devison (Devison Vintners) the wines demonstrate a finesse that reflects a dedication to both the land and the craft. “Peter is very talented and gifted,” acknowledges Vicki. Her husband, Scott, oversees the vineyard, as well as occasionally shadowing Devison in the cellar.

The name Mongata means Moon Path. “The moon moves down over the vineyard most of the year—the sky is beautiful here,” explains Vicki, adding, “There is a specialness about this place.” Embracing the dark-sky movement, Mongata hosts an annual star gazing event led by a knowledgeable local astronomer, allowing guests to connect with the cosmos. The backside of the farmhouse features a relaxing vacation rental with a large hot tub, dubbed the Moonrise Suite.

With a charming 102-year-old barn transformed into an elegant tasting room, guests are welcomed by the warmth of reclaimed wood and boho vibes created by a crescent-shaped granite tasting bar and stunning chandelier crafted from willow branches sourced from the farm.

Outdoors there are plenty of additional areas where tasters can unwind, not to mention curated picnics that can be reserved in advance for guests to enjoy lunch by the picturesque vineyard or the tranquil river.
